Why Montessori?

The Montessori method of education focuses on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play!

A Montessori classroom is a happy and safe space that is specially designed to meet the developmental needs of each child at every stage of development.

During your child’s time at Snowflake Day Nursery and Montessori, we will focus on the five key areas of Montessori learning;

Practical Life

When a child first enters our classroom, they will immediately feel comfortable to freely explore and interact with the available materials based on what interests them. Our teachers will respect each child as a separate and unique individual to help them grow into confident, independent and self-motivated learners.

At Snowflake Day Nursery and Montessori, we aim to provide quality experiences that will enhance your child's development, encourage their independence and foster a love of learning they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

The Early Years Foundation Stage

At Snowflakes, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), a government framework for learning, development and care of children from birth until the age of five.

Its purpose is to provide all children with the best possible learning opportunities and experiences to help each child reach their full potential. This will ensure that your child is ready for school when they leave Snowflakes Day Nursery and Montessori.

A Unique Child + Positive Relationships + Enabling Environments = Learning and Development

A Unique Child

“Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured”

We believe that the child is at the centre of the learning process, and the teacher must follow the child. This means the teacher understands each child’s unique interests and can ensure that planning is catered to meet the child’s needs via their own natural interests. The teacher can identify these needs and interests by analysing the observations they have made of the children.

Positive Relationships

“Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships”

We believe that parents are the first educators for children, and therefore, must be respected. We encourage active partnership with parents and carers through communications with their child’s key person who will be assigned when a child is enrolled. The key person will act as a secure base from where the child feels safe and comfortable to explore.

Enabling environments

“Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, where their experiences respond to their individual needs, and where there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parent/carers” - BAECE, 2012

Montessori teaching highlights the importance of providing a favourable environment for children which promotes self-construction. This enables children to act on what Montessori called, ‘Human Tendencies’, which are manifested as sensitive periods during different stages of development. Through the freedom in the Montessori environment, children are able to act on these sensitive periods in a way that meets their individual needs.

Learning and Development

“Children develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision.”

With Montessori teaching, we believe that learning should be guided by the child. Children learn through doing, therefore we value play as central to the children’s development. This allows the child to learn in the way they most enjoy and need.
