The Early Years Foundation Stage

At Snowflakes, we follow the Early Years Foundations Stage (EYFS), a government framework for learning, development and care of children from birth to five. Its purpose is to provide all children with the best possible learning opportunities and experiences to help each child reach their full potential. This will ensure your child is ready for school when they leave Snowflakes Day Nursery and Montessori.

 A Unique Child:

EYFS: “Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.”

We believe the child is at the centre of the learning process and the teacher must follow the child. This means the teacher understands each child’s unique interests and can ensure that planning is catered to meet the child’s needs via their interests. The teacher is able to identify these needs and interests analysing observations they have made of children.

Positive relationships:

EYFS: “Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships”

We believe that parents are the first educators for children and therefore must be respected. We encourage active partnership with parents and carers through communications with the key person. The key person also acts as a secure base from where the child feels comfortable to explore.

 Enabling environments:

EYFS: “Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, where their experiences respond to their individual needs and where there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parent/carers” (BAECE, 2012)

Montessori: We provide a favourable environment which promotes self-construction. This enables children to act on what Montessori called human tendencies, which are manifested as sensitive periods during different stage of development. Through the freedom in the Montessori environment children are able to act on these sensitive periods which meet their individual needs.

 Learning and Development:

EYFS: “Children develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years

ontessori: We believe that learning should be guided by the child. Children learn through doing therefore we value play as central to children’s learning and development. This allows the child to learn in the way they most enjoy/need.
